Die Sanierung des Gebäudes
wird zirka 1,8 Mio Dollar
kosten. 600 000 Dollar sol-
len durch Spenden aufge-
bracht wrden.

Das Musterbeispiel für eine
geglückte Kampagne lieferten
1995 die alten Beatles. Mit
ihrem studiotechnisch aufge-
peppten Lennon-Demo "Free As
A Bird" sowie den "Antholo-
gy"-CDs und der TV-Serie be-
herrschten sie die Schlag-
zeilen.
Da fiel kaum ins Gewicht,
daß die "neue" Single doch
eher enttäuschend ausfiel -
das erste von drei Archiv-
Alben verkaufte sich allein
in Deutschland innerhalb we-
niger Wochen 500 000 mal und
wanderte schnurstraks inter-
national an die Charts-Spit-
zen.

Peppig: "Free Like A Bird"
Mike Flowers schlägt schon
wieder zu! Nachdem er den
Oasis-Song "Wonderwall" in
einer Easy-Listening-Version
zum Hit gemacht hat, dreht
er nun auch den Beatles-Song
"Free Like A Bird" durch die
Mangel.
Der Brite glaubt, daß die
Lennon-Nummer für die mei-
sten Fans eine Enttäuschung
ist. "Ich dachte, ich peppe
ihn ein bißchen auf und ma-
che ihn so zu der Weih-
nachtsnummer, die er sein
sollte. Das alles ist natür-
lich eher satirisch als nur
musikalisch gemeint."

Neue Platte von Yoko Ono
Die Beatles sind ja mit
Platte und TV-Serie wieder
mächtig im Gespräch (im Ge-
rede?) - Lennon-Witwe Yoko
Ono wäre nicht Yoko Ono,
wenn sie nicht die Gelegen-
heit nutzte, auch auf sich
selbst mal wieder aufmerksam
zu machen. Nach zehn Jahren
ging die 62jährige wieder
ins Studio, um eine Solo-
scheibe aufzunehmen.
Ihr Sohn Sean soll sie auf
die Idee gebracht haben. Er
und seine Band IMA begleiten
Yoko. Das Ergebnis der Mühe
heißt "Rising" und wird bei
"Spin Records" erscheinen.

len 3/4-Wiederbelebung mal
abgesehen). Und dennoch wa-
ren die vergangenen fünf
Jahre die erfolgreichsten
der Gruppe überhaupt, finan-
ziell gesehen. 300 Millionen
Dollar haben Paul, George
und Ringo (plus Yoko Ono)
seit 1990 verdient. Mehr als
die ganzen vergangenen Jahre
zusammen!
Die Zeitschrift "Hollywood
Reporter" behauptet, daß
1996 weitere 200 Dollar-Mios
zu erwarten seien. Happy New
Year.

joining forces to support Conservative
MP Nigel Evans in his bid to get George

Starr honoured for their services to
music and their contribution to
Britain's export earnings.
If Prime Minister John Major takes the
advice, then the pop legends could be
knighted as early as The Queen's
birthday honours list in June 1996.

es wissen. Ein US-Gericht
im Bundesstaat Kalifornien
hat die Behörde verurteilt,
alle Informationen heraus-
zurücken. Außerdem müssen
illegale Methoden und die
Namen der Spitzel offenge-
legt werden.
Bisher ist bekannt, daß das
FBI Lennon und seine Frau
Yoko Ono Anfang der siebzi-
ger Jahre auf Schritt und
Tritt überwacht hat. Der
Grund war der Protest der
beiden gegen den Vietnam-
Krieg.

Beatles mit Akustik-Nummer
Die Beatles-Gerüchteküche
brodelt weiter auf stärk-
ster Stufe. Angeblich haben
die verbliebenen Band-Mit-
glieder eine Akustik-Ver-
sion des "White Album" ge-
plant.
Ein Sprecher von Paul,
Ringo und George hat dies
jetzt dementiert. Auf dem
zweiten "Anthology"-Album
werde es eine akustische
Version von "While My Gui-
tar Gently Weeps" geben.
Mehr Akustik-Nummern vom
Weißen Album seien nicht ge-
plant. Die zweite "Antholo-
gy"-CD wird im kommenden
Jahr erscheinen.
Translation:
There are lots of rumors concerning the Beatles.
The remaining band members are said to be planning
to release an acoustic version of the "White Album".
A spokesman of Paul, Ringo and George has now denied this.
On the 2nd Anthology album there will be an acoustic version
of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". More acoustic numbers
from the White Album are not scheduled. The 2nd "Anthology"
CD will be released next year.

zug? Noch weiß es niemand
so genau. Klar ist nur, daß
die Beatles ein Happening
im Londoner Plattenladen
Tower Records am Piccadilly
Circus planen.
Ein Sprecher des Geschäfts
hat bestätigt, daß für
Donnerstag Nachmittag etwas
geplant ist, doch was genau,
darüber hüllen sich alle
beteiligten inclusive Apple
Corps in tiefes Schweigen.
Die Single "Free As A Bird"
ist jedenfalls nicht mehr auf
Platz 1. und das soll wohl
nun geändert werden.
Translation:
Sensation of PR gag? Still nobody knows
it exactly. Sure is only that the Beatles
plan a happening at the London record shop
"Tower Records" at the Piccadilly Circus.
A spokesman of the shop has confirmed that
something is planned for Thursday afternoon,

Ringo Starr wurde bei So-
theby's für 95.000 Mark
versteigert.
Ein anonymer Beatle-Fan
hatte das Glück, den sechs-
türigen Luxus-Schlitten zu
ergattern. Der Benz, Bau-
jahr '68, galt damals als
das luxuriöseste Auto: Es
hatte getönte Scheiben, TV,
Stereoanlage, Luxus-Stitze
und Klimaanlage. Charles,
der Prinz von Wales, bekam
bei der selben Versteigerung
für seinen Aston Martin V8
225.000 Mark. Das Geld geht
an "Prince of Wales Trust"!

The car of Beatle-man Ringo Starr was
auctioned at Sotheby's for DM95,000.
An anonymous Beatle fan was lucky to auction
the classy car with 6 doors. The Mercedes Benz,
built in '68, was seen as the most luxurious
car at that time: It has tinted windows, TV,
stereo, luxurious seats and air condition.
Charles, the Prince of Wales, got DM225,000
for his Aston Martin V8 during the same
auction. The money is for the "Prince Of
Wales Trust"!

LENNON ANNIVERSARY

Fans of John Lennon marked the 15th
anniversary of the former Beatle's
death by visiting his memorial garden
in Central Park and gazing silently
at the apartment gateway where he was
murdered.
Lennon stamps that were issued in eight
countries were unveiled. Lennon's wife,
Yoko Ono, selected the paintings and
digitalized photos of Lennon at
different stages of his life.
Lennon was shot and killed at the
Dakota building across the street from
the park by Mark David Chapman.

Keine No.1 für die Beatles
Klingeling - die Beatles überra-
schen ihre Fangemeinde mit ihrem er-
sten Weihnachtssong. Sinnigerweise
heißt er "Christmas Time" und ist
gerade als B-Seite ihrer "Free As A
Bird"-Single-CD herausgekommen. Das
Stück ist 1967 aufgenommen worden -
damals exclusiv für ein paar Freun-
de.
Die Charts haben die "Fab Four" in-
des nicht so aufgemischt, wie viele
erwartet hatten. In der LP-CD-Hitpa-
rade kamen sie letzte Woche nicht
an Robson & Jerome vorbei, die Sin-
gle dürfte es gegen Michael Jackson
auch nicht schaffen.
Translation:
Ringring - the Beatles surprise their fans with
their first Christmas song. Clever, it is named "Christmas Time"
and has just been issued as the B-side of their single CD
"Free As A Bird". The piece had been recorded in 1967 -
then exclusively for a few friends.
The Fab Four did not have this much of impact on the charts
as many had expected. In the LP CD charts they couldn't win
against Robson&Jerome, the single probably will lose against
Michael Jackson, too.

Schon Frank Zappa behaup-
tete: "We're Only In It For
The Money." Das trifft auch
auf die drei verbliebenen
Beatles zu, meint Lemmy,
Sänger und Bassist von Mo-
torhead.
Lemmy glaubt, daß hinter
der Veröffentlichung der
Beatles-Doppel-CD aus-
schließlich kommerzielle
Interessen stehen. Die Beat-
les würden ein Geschäft aus
dem Ruhm früherer Jahre
machen. Eines allerdings
stimmt Lemmy gnädig. Die
Single-Auskopplung "Free As
A Bird" findet er toll.
Translation:
Even Frank Zappa claimed: "We're Only In It
For The Money." This also applies to the three
remaining Beatles, thinks Lemmy, singer and
bass player of Motorhead.
Lemmy believes that only commercial considerations
stood behind the release of the Beatles double CD.

The Beatles have released a Christmas
song for the first time in the group's
history. The track Christmas Time (Is
Here Again) has been released as the
mystery B-side of the Fab Four's first
single for 25 years, Free As A Bird.
The song, recorded by the Beatles in
1967 as part of a fan club-only gift
package, has never before been put on
general release or made available for
airplay. It doesn't feature on the hit
Anthology One album and will not be
available again. Other tracks on the CD
version of the single are I Saw Her
Standing There and This Boy.

"Earth Song" wohl nicht von
der Pole-Position verdrängen
werden können.
Dabei offeriert das Scheib-
chen ein ganz besonderes Ex-
tra: Auf der B-Seite findet

re Again)", eine erstmals
veröffentlichte Weihnachts-
nummer, die 1967 für den
Fan-Club eingespielt wurde.

Auch 'Stones' greifen in Archivkiste
Auch die legendären 'Rolling Stones'
springen jetzt auf den Archiv-Aufnah-
men-Zug. Sie planen, eines ihrer be-
rühmtesten Konzerte in Bild und Ton
zu veröffentlichen. Nach dem Kassen-
schlager der 'Beatles-Anthology I'
soll von den 'Stones' im Januar der
'68 aufgenommene 'Rock'n'Roll Circus'
erscheinen.
Damals spielte noch Brian Jones Gi-
tarre, und John Lennon, Eric Clapton,
'Jethro Tull' und 'The Who' traten
als Begleitgruppen auf.
Translation:
The legendary 'Rolling Stones' are also joining
the train of recordings from the archives. They
plan to issue one of their most famous concerts
both in picture and sound. After the top seller
'Beatles-Anthology I' the "Rock'n'Roll Circus'

Zak, ein typischer Brite
Schwesterchen frönte vor
ihrer Operation dem wilden
Lebensstil (> 115), Zak
Starkey hat null Ambitionen,
den Hollywood-Rummel mitzu-
erleben, den Vater Ringo so
sehr mag.
"Ich bin fanatischer Eng-
länder. Wenn ich woanders
bin, suche ich im TV nach
'Eastenders'-Folgen, trinke
Tee oder mache andere Dinge,
die mich an zu Hause erin-
nern." Derzeit drummt Zak
für die Band Face. Und zwar
nicht so, wie es Daddy getan
hätte: "Mein Haupteinfluß
war Whos Keith Moon", sagt
Zak.
Translation:
His sister indulge an wild life-style before her
operation, Zak has no ambitions to attend the
commotion that father Ringo likes so much.
"I am a fanatic Englishman. When I'm somewhere
else, I search for 'Eastenders' episodes on TV,
drink tee or do other things that remind me on
home." Currently Zak is drumming for the band Face.
And not the same way as Daddy would have done.

nach ihrer Hirntumor-Opera-
tion einen großen Blumen-
strauß als Genesungswunsch.
Lee: "Ich habe ihn lange
nicht gesehen, aber es war
eine nette Geste."
Heute empfindet die 25jäh-
rige den Eingriff als Wink
des Schicksals. "Bevor es
geschah, war ich jede Nacht
auf Partys." Jetzt läßt sie
es ruhiger angehen. "Obwohl
die Ärzte mir gesagt haben,
daß der Tumor nichts mit dem
Lebensstil zu tun hatte."

Lennon son Julian has sent a big bunch of flowers
to Lee Starkey, daughter of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr,
after her brain tumor operation. Lee: "I haven't seen
him for a long time but it's been a nice gesture."
Now the 25 year old sees the operation as a hint
of fate. "Before it happened, I was at parties every
night." Now she
"In spite of the doctors telling me that the tumor
had nothing to do with the life-style."

Beatles-"Bird": Tiefflieger
Das Beatles-Album "Antholo-
gy" hat sofort die US-Charts
getoppt, die "neue" Single
"Free As A Bird" dagegen hat
Schwiergkeiten, die Airplay-
Hitparade zu erklimmen.
In dieser Woche steigt die
Nummer nur auf Rang 62 ein.
"Einige Programm-Macher sind
von dem Song nicht besonders
angetan", sagt Mike Kinosian
vom "Billboard"-Magazin, das
die Charts erhebt. "Man nahm
vorher an, das Lied würde
die Qualität von 'Penny La-
ne' oder 'Michelle' haben.
Aber 'Free As A Bird' ist
nicht in dieser Liga!"
Translation:
The Beatles album "Anthology" has topped the US charts
immediately but the "new" single "Free As A Bird" has
difficulties in climbing the airplay charts.
This week it entered only at position 62. "Some
DJs do not like the song so well" says Mike Kinosian
of "Billboard" magazine that creates these charts.
"One was expecting that the song was the same quality
as "Penny Lane" or "Michell". But "Free As A Bird" does
not belong to this league!"

Beatles-Album in den USA ein Renner
Zehn Tage nach dem Erscheinen bricht
das Beatles-Album 'Anthology' in den
USA alle Rekorde. Nach Angaben der
Plattenfirma wurden bereits mehr als
eine Million Exemplare verkauft. Mit
Verkaufseinnahmen von 31,5 Millionen
Mark hat die Scheibe damit alle bis-
herigen Rekorde gebrochen.
Meistverkaufte Alben waren bislang
zwei Werke der Gruppe Guns N' Roses.
Sie verkauften sich 1991 je 700.000
Mal binnen einer Woche.
Translation:
Ten days after its release, the Beatles
album "Anthology" breaks all records in the USA.
According to the record company more than one million
copies have been sold. With 31.5 million German Marks
sales takings this disk has broken all former records.
The former best selling album are the two works of the
group Guns N'Roses. They were sold each at 700,000 copies
within a week in 1991.

NEW YORK: Das neue Beatles-Album
"Anthology" bricht alle Rekorde: In der
ersten Verkaufswoche gingen allein in
den USA 856 000 Doppel-CDs über den La-
dentisch. Michael Jacksons alter Rekord
mit 391 000 verkauften Doppel-CDs des
Albums "History" ist nun Geschichte.
Translation:
New York: The new Beatles album "Anthology"
beats all records: In the first week, 856,000
double CDs were sold in the USA alone. Michael
Jackson's old record of 391,000 sold double CDs
of the album "HiStory" is now history.

BEATLES-REVIVAL-WETTBEWERB
Für alle, die mehr als nur Beatles-Fans
sind, hat sich das ZDF etwas Besonderes
einfallen lassen: einen Beatles-Revi-
val-Wettbewerb. Bands im ganzen Land
sind aufgefordert, sich mit ihren Beat-
les-Song-Interpretationen zu bewerben.
Der Preis für den Sieger: ein Auftritt
anläßlich der großen Beatles-ZDF-Party
in Hamburg am 22. Dezember.
Mitzuschicken sind ein Demo-Band und
ein aktuelles Foto oder eine VHS-Cas-
sette an: ZDF / "Beatles-Wettbewerb"

Auch wenn alle sagen, die
Platte tauge nichts: Letzt-
lich zählen die Zahlen, und
die brechen alle Rekorde:
Das neue Beatles-Album wur-
de in den USA in der ersten
Woche 856 000 mal verkauft -
dagegen ist der bisherige
Rekordhalter Jacko mit sei-
nen 391 000 "HiStory""-Exem-
plaren weit abgedrängt. Nur
Peal Jam verkaufte mehr -
allerdings keine Doppel-CDs.
Die Plattenfirma Capitol Re-
cords glaubt gar, daß die
Beatles auch sie abdrängten:
200 000 im Buchhandel ver-
kaufte CDs wurden nicht ge-
zählt.
Translation:
Even if everyone's saying the record is
no good: in the end, the numbers rule,
and they are breaking all records:
The new Beatles album was sold 856,000 times
in the USA in the first week - the former
record by Jacko with 391,000 copies of his
"HiStory" album is far behind. Only Pearl Jam
sold more units - but no double CDs.
Record company Capitol Records even believes
that the Beatles will beat even them:
200,000 copies sold through book shops have
not been counted.
