2002-Jan-16: It's Official! He's Going to the Super Bowl!

National Football League organizers have announced that Sir Paul will lead the live pregame tribute to the heroes of the September 11 tragedy at this year's Super Bowl game.  In a statement, Sir Paul said:
"As a sports fan, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved in the Super Bowl, and as a musician, I am honored to add my voice to the message of tribute that this year's Super Bowl will carry."
The game will be played on February 3 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.  The televised event  will be seen by 130 million viewers in the United States and beamed to another 800 million worldwide.   As the climax to the pregame show, and immediately prior to the singing of traditional anthems "America The Beautiful" and "The Star-Spangled Banner," Sir Paul  will perform his new anthem reflecting the spirit of freedom.  Since this will be an international event, Sir Paul will perform his Freedom anthem with 500 young singers representing the 180 countries that will televise the program.

The pregame show, will be televised in its entirety, a first in Super Bowl history. Before Sir Paul's appearance, The Boston Pops orchestra will perform a selection of American classics including two works by legendary American composer Aaron Copland his "Fanfare for the Common Man" and excerpts from "A Lincoln Portrait."  Also appearing in the pregame show will be the America's Heroes Chorus, comprised of representatives >from the five branches of
the military based in Louisiana.  Michael Flur, the show's consulting producer says, "It is expected to be the most stirring and emotionally charged Super Bowl ever.'' The NFL commissioner, Paul Tagliabue, added: "The Super Bowl will be a celebration of the human spirit.  We will salute those who have helped make us stronger since September 11 and recognize those who will make a difference in every community. We are delighted that Paul McCartney has agreed to lead this tribute to freedom and everyday heroes."
