In a statement, Sir Paul said that Sir Bob Geldof's plan to use Live 8 to focus on poverty in Africa a "great idea," and that he is looking forward to helping:
"I think Bob is handling it with his usual panache; if anyone can pull it off it's Bob and Bono. The energy and passion that this idea can produce could be a landmark moment for all of us."
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on July 2d, MTV and VH1 will air a shared, eight-hour feed from the Live 8 concerts featuring performances from five all-star shows being staged in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin and Rome. XM Satellite Radio and AOLmusic.com will offer even more comprehensive coverage, with fans able to access the concerts live. ABC is also negotiating for a prime-time telecast on July 2 following the cable TV coverage.
