Updated January 13. It has been announced that Sir Paul and Heather have donated $1.9 million dollars ( £1 million) to the British Tsunami appeal. The funds, presented to the International Rescue Committee of the U.K. (an independent charity) will save countless lives. IRC president, George Rupp, was quoted as saying that the organization is overwhelmed by the McCartney's generosity:"The McCartneys have our deep gratitude for their extremely generous contribution. It will have a major impact on the capacity of IRC emergency teams in Aceh, Indonesia to deliver lifesaving assistance to tens of thousands of people from devastated communities."
The International Rescue Committee is committed to freedom, human dignity and self-reliance. The organization is considered a global leader in humanitarian relief, rehabilitation, protection, post-conflict development, advocacy and resettlement services for refugees and others uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. In Indonesia, five IRC mobile relief teams, with specialists in health, water supply, sanitation and child protection have fanned out across Aceh Province by boat, road and helicopter to deliver emergency services and supplies to some of the hardest hit villages. IRC teams are providing urgent medical treatment, stocking remote clinics with medicines, bringing in water and distributing food, water purification tablets, shelter materials and hygiene supplies. IRC experts in child trauma are also working to identify particularly vulnerable children, including orphans and separated children, and will be providing psychosocial, educational and family reunification assistance.
A friend of the McCartneys said of the contribution:
"Paul and Heather were extremely moved by the catastrophe. They wanted to do their bit to help and wanted to be a part of the aid effort."
