During her recent BBC 1 Tabloid Tales television appearance (see May 16) Heather claimed that allegations lodged against her in the press have had a negative effect on her charity work. She referred to a story which circulated last year in which Heather was accused of misappropriating charity funds for her Indian earthquake appeal. Heather later sued and won the case against the British newspaper that published the story.
This week, Britain's Hello, the magazine that helped Heather to organize the earthquake appeal, published a story confirming Heather's claim that she did not mishandle the charity funds. In fact, Hello reports that Heather never handled the funds at all:"We sent the money straight to India. When she learned that thousands of people had lost limbs... just as she had herself in a road accident eight years ago, she contacted HELLO! and asked us to support her as she visited the scene of the earthquake".Heather's visit to Bhuj and several other quake ravaged area of Gujarat resulted in thousands of injured Indians being able to walk again.
