The El Mercurio reports today that Sir Paul will pay the $8000 plane fare to fly an abused chimpanzee from Chile to Zambia. The chimp was smuggled out of Africa 23 years ago to perform in a Chilean circus. Since 1979, Toto "the gorilla" was forced to box, dance, smoke, and drink alcohol during his Koning Circus performances. Between performances, the chimp was kept in a small cage with heavy chains locked around his neck and legs. His cruel confinement left him injured, ill, and depressed.
Since his rescue from the circus in January, Toto has been being cared for by the Primate Recuperation and Rehabilitation Center in Santiago, Chile. Sir Paul will finance Toto's special traveling conditions through Animal Defenders, a British non-governmental organisation. Toto will be returned to Zambia's Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage where he will live in a free-range refuge with 80 other chimpanzees.
