Today's San Francisco Chronicle tells about how Ralph Whitworth managed to persuade Sir Paul to fly to San Diego, at his own expense, to entertain at a surprise party for his wife. (see February 22).
In the article, Mr. Whitworth explains that his wife, Wendy Walker Whitworth, is a huge McCartney fan. A few years ago, as executive producer of CNN's Larry King Live, Mrs. Whitworth had booked Sir Paul on the television show. After that, the couple attended a McCartney concert where Mr. Whitworth says, "We did the backstage thing - had a nice chat. We hit it off."
So for this wife's 50th birthday, Mr. Whitworth called Sir Paul and offered to donate $1 million to Adopt-a-Minefield if he would play at the birthday party. Sir Paul agreed, and paid his own way to San Diego.
Mr. Whitworth claims he wasn't planning to publicize the event (now the world knows his wife's age!) It was Sir Paul's people who issued the press release about the party, calling it a warm-up to the European tour. Now the Whitworths are amazed at the press they are receiving saying, "We're going to be in Rolling Stone, even!"
