London's Guardian reports today that Sir Paul has sent a letter of protest on behalf of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to Claude Martin, director general of WWF, the wildlife organization, concerning that organization's active support of the testing of chemicals on animals, a practice that kills these animals.
The WWF states that the tests are necessary "or we are all part of a dangerous global experiment, the result of which we do not know". Sir Paul takes issue with this saying that the WWF has strayed off course and that the tests are "needlessly torturing and killing millions of animals". He goes on to write:"I was appalled to learn from PETA that the U.S. office of the WWF has been a driving force behind the design and development of one of the largest animal testing programs in international history. WWF has been involved in pressurising the U.S. Congress to require the testing of chemicals for hormone disrupting effects. [The WWF supports testing] that causes the suffering and deaths of more than 1,300 animals per chemical tested".
