The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced today that Sir Paul has been selected to receive this year's Kennedy Center Honors. "The honors recipients are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts," the Kennedy Center said in a statement Tuesday. Sir Paul is being honored as "one of the most prolific and influential songwriters of our era." Also being honored this year are actor James Earl Jones, conductor James Levine, entertainer Chita Rivera, and actress Elizabeth Taylor.
The awards will be presented by Secretary of State Colin Powell at a dinner to be held on December 7. The following evening, President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush will receive the honorees at the White House before attending a gala performance and supper dance at the Kennedy Center. The gala performance will be televised on CBS later in December.
