It was announced yesterday that Stella McCartney has chosen Manhattan's trendy Greenwich Village as the venue for her first retail outlet. It was expected that Stella would select the elegant Fifth Avenue as the locale for her boutique, but vegetarian Stella's shop will be located the heart of New York city's meat packing district. Few people live in this area, perhaps because of the distinctive odor from the meat packing plants. There are several shops and restaurants in the neighborhood, however most retailers consider the area remote and untested. A spokesman for Stella's company in London said he could not say if she had hesitated over opening a boutique in an area so closely associated with meat.
You may recall that back in the UK, Stella chose one of the most dangerous areas of London, Kensal Rise, as the headquarters for her company, Stella McCartney Ltd. (See January 7) Although this rundown area of northwest London that borders Notting Hill is better known for gun violence, drug dealing and prostitution, is fast becoming one of the city's most exclusive addresses. In fact, Mick Jagger's bohemian daughter, Jade, has just moved in to a £1million warehouse just around the corner from Stella's establishment. Jade has converted a red brick warehouse into both her home and a design studio. Since last September, Ms. Jagger has been designing jewelry exclusively for the 300-year-old Bond Street society jewelers, Asprey and Garrard.
