2002-Apr-12: On to Toronto

Special Issue of the Toronto SunThe Toronto Sun reports today that when Sir Paul pulls into the Air Canada Centre tomorrow night for his sold-out show, it will mark his seventh concert appearance in Toronto. He was there previously with The Beatles (1964, 1965 and 1966), Wings (1976), and for a pair of solo shows (1989 and 1993).

In celebration of the event, today's edition of the the Toronto Sun features a 12-page pull-out special tribute section dedicated to Sir Paul.  Among all the interesting articles is one entitled "Baby, You're A Rich Man" which documents many of the popular tunes to which Sir Paul as acquired the publishing rights through his MPL Communications, Ltd.  Sir Paul holds the copyright on over 25,000 songs.

For example, Sir Paul controls the copyrights to such Broadway hits as Grease, Hello Dolly, Annie, Guys And Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, The Music Man, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Pajama Game, and Damn Yankees.   Sir Paul also owns the rights to a host of 20th-century standards written by Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Frank Loesser, Sammy Cahn, Hoagy Carmichael, Jelly Roll Morton, E.Y. Harburg, and Charles Strouse, and of course, Buddy Holly.

One of Sir Paul's tunes, Unchained Melody, rocketed to the top of the charts last month as Gareth Gates debut single.  The tune has been covered nearly 700 times in its existence by artists ranging from Ricky Nelson to ZZ Top.  It also tops the charts of Sir Paul's top moneymaking tunes which are:
