The city of Liverpool is emerging as a front runner in the European Capital of Culture race.
Conceived as a means of bringing European citizens closer together, the European City of Culture initiative was launched on June 13,1985. Since that time, the contest has become quite successful among European citizens and has had a growing cultural and socio-economic impact on the numerous visitors it has attracted to the winning cities.
Meanwhile, Liverpool appears to be in a close tie with Newcastle Gateshead to receive the prize in 2008. Sir Paul is doing his best to back his hometown in the race saying, "I agree with the poet Allen Ginsberg that Liverpool is the capital of the universe."
