Geoff Baker announced today that Sir Paul will headline "The Concert for New York", an all-star rock 'n' roll extravaganza to be held in New York City on October 20 to benefit the families of the firefighters and rescue workers who were lost in the World Trade Center attacks. Ringo Starr has offered to perform with his former Beatle mate. Elton John, Mick Jagger and Neil Young have also been invited to the event along with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, David Bowie, Billy Joel, John Mellencamp, Macy Gray, James Taylor, Melissa Etheridge, Santana, Jon Bon Jovi, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Matchbox 20, Limp Bizkit, Mary J. Blige, the Goo Goo Dolls, India.Arie, and Eminem. The Who and Led Zeppelin have been asked to re-form for the show. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock have been asked to serve as hosts. John Cusack and Jim Carrey have also agreed to participate.
Miramax movie's Harvey Weinstein is organizing the 4-hour event which will be held in New York City's Madison Square Garden, and broadcast around the world on MTV, VH1 and other networks. Hundreds of radio stations around the world are expected to broadcast the show live. AOL will provide a live Web cast. A phone number will be provided to members of the home audience who wish to donate money to aid the attack victims and their families.
A spin-off album of the concert may also be released.
Tickets will go on sale on October 7. Among the invited guests will be 5,000 members of the New York fire, police and rescue crews and their families.
Sir Paul still intends to hold his October 4 poetry reading at London's Queen's Theater
for an audience of 600 people. Geoff Baker said: "It's like chalk and cheese. Just two weeks earlier he will be at a poetry reading at the request of the organizers of National Poetry Day to raise its profile. He was in New York when the tragedy happened and like everyone has been affected very deeply by it and wants to do what he can to help those who have been affected by this appalling tragedy."
