Today, Sir Paul directed his London office to release the following statement:"Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are pleased to announce their engagement. The couple are looking forward to being married some time next year. Paul and Heather said they would like to thank their relatives and friends for all the great support they have shown them since they met two years ago."Spokesman Geoff Baker stated that he had no idea when the wedding might be, or if it would be a large or small affair. He did say, "They are both delighted, as are the kids and as is everyone."
Throughout the day, the stories surfaced that Sir Paul went down on one knee to propose to Heather on Monday evening following a romantic dinner at Sharrow Bay Hotel at Ullswater in Britain's Lake District where they were enjoying a short walking holiday. Heather wept as she immediately replied, "Yes". Sir Paul then presented her with a large sapphire and diamond ring, which he had secretly purchased last February when the couple were in Jaipur, near Rajasthan, India, where Heather was attending to some children who had lost limbs in an earthquake.
The couple returned to London from their Lake District holiday on Tuesday to break the news to Sir Paul's children Stella, Mary and James, and Heather. They are said to be "delighted".
Also pleased by the news is Sir Paul's brother Mike. With his wife, Rowena, at his side, he announced from their home on the Wirral: "We were very happy. Heather's a lovely girl down-to-earth girl. All his Liverpool family are delighted. And after what Paul has been through it is great to have some lovely, happy news for a change."
This evening, Sir Paul appeared briefly outside his home in St. Johns Wood, London looking happy and relaxed in his white shirt and casual trousers. He joked with the press, accusing them of having married him off months ago. When asked how he proposed to Heather, he refused to provide the details saying, "That's private, that's just for me."
